We met Zach at Joe and Inga’s house and walked over to the field from there. Blake had rigged the lights we’d been using during picking to all come on with the flip of one switch. And I knew he was itching to have fun with that. Zach and Blake both had megaphones, which meant these highschoolers were going to get the snot scared out of them. And it served them right for stealing.

Walking in the dark, I tripped but recovered before tumbling forward. Without breaking stride, Blake tucked an arm around my waist and whispered, “You okay?”

“Yeah. I blame the lack of sleep.”

“Fall toward me. I’ll catch you.” He clasped my hand, and we continued toward the field.

We opened the camping chairs and sat near the end of a row. Since the intruders wanted to avoid the neighbors’ property, chances were good they’d come in using the road where Blake and I parked the other night.

After a few minutes of quiet, Blake cocked his head and grinned. Zach looked equally excited as voices approached. Four guys walked into the field, each carrying a five-gallon bucket. Blake had described the ringleader, but the kid was easy to spot. He strutted around like he owned the place.

“We already picked everything off this first row, so start over there.” The main punk led the group closer to us.

Once they were all in view, I hit the switch, and Blake and Zach lifted their megaphones.

“Hands up. This is the police.” Blake grinned at me. “I’ve always wanted to say that.”

“Mr. Hunt, I wish I could say I was surprised to see you here.” Zach clearly recognized the delinquent.

The ringleader put his hands on his hips, pretending like he wasn’t quaking. “Is walking through a field a crime?”

“Hunt?” I nudged Blake. “Laurie’s last name is Hunt. That’s how he knew.”

“And she’s out of town.” He raised the megaphone again. “Your mom is going to be upset when she finds out you stole from the winery and are making wine in the shed.”

Zach shook his head. “Theft and alcohol. This keeps getting worse.”

The other guys lifted their hands higher, and after looking at each other, one said, “We’re sorry for trespassing. And about the grapes. I can’t get in trouble. My parents will flip.”

“Not much I can do about that.” Zach raked his fingers through his hair.

I stepped forward. “Zach, can I speak to you a moment?”

Blake moved closer to the group as Zach and I shifted away.

“I’m willing to forgo charges and let them work off the inconvenience. But I want parents notified.”

“That’s kind of you. I’ll offer them the out. Three of them will jump on it. But Reggie Hunt thinks he can get away with anything. He’ll probably turn down your offer.”

“His choice. But I’ll definitely be talking to his mom. She works for me.”

“Ouch.” Zach laughed. “He picked on the wrong person, I think.”

I eased up beside Blake, and he hooked his index finger around mine.

“You can drop your hands.” Zach shifted a light so that it wasn’t blinding the teens.
